About this typing speed test

Thumbspeed is a free typing speed test made for phones. Choose a duration, pick a text, tap the box and start typing. When the timer ends, you see your words per minute (WPM), your typing accuracy and a chart of how your speed changed during the test.

How WPM is calculated

A word is counted as five characters, including spaces and punctuation. Your net WPM is the number of correct characters divided by five, then divided by the time you spent typing in minutes. Only characters that match the text are counted, so pressing keys quickly without care will not raise your score.

How typing accuracy is calculated

Accuracy is the percentage of keys you pressed that matched the text. Backspace lets you fix a mistake, and the corrected text counts toward your WPM, but the original mistake stays in your accuracy. This keeps the score honest, because the cleanest typing earns the highest accuracy.

When does the timer start?

The timer starts with your first key press, not when you tap the box, so you can get ready first. On a computer keyboard, press Esc at any time to start a new test.

What is a good typing speed on a phone?

Most people type around 36 WPM on a phone, so anything above 40 WPM is a strong result. Scores above 60 WPM are fast for thumb typing. Typing on a phone is usually slower than on a full keyboard, so compare your score with other phone typists rather than with desktop numbers.

Which text modes can I choose?

Sentences gives you full sentences with capital letters and punctuation. Words uses short, common words for a quick speed check. Punctuation adds commas, apostrophes, quotation marks and brackets, which is a good test of your symbol keyboard. Numbers mixes digits and symbols, which is a good test of your number keyboard.

Tips to type faster on your phone

  • Use both thumbs and keep your hands relaxed.
  • Read one or two words ahead instead of watching the keys.
  • Aim for accuracy first. Fewer corrections make you faster overall.
  • Practice with short 30 second rounds every day and watch your best score improve.
  • Test on the keyboard you use every day, so the result reflects real use.
